Searching for the Quetzal

Background Info

Some people consider the quetzal one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Male quetzals have blue-green feathers with a red belly. They also have a mohawk-like crest and very long (up to 3 feet) tail feathers. Females have duller green feathers with a grey belly. They lack the crest and the long tail feathers. Quetzals build their nests in a trunk of a rotten tree. They are usually found in high elevation damp forests. For more information about the quetzal, click here.

Mirador de Quetzales

We stayed overnight at El Mirador de Quetzales . We all stayed in cabins that slept 2-5 people. There was also a main lodge where they served us meals and coffee/hot chocolate. The views and surrounding area were amazing! To access their website click here.

The Hike

We all get up at sunrise to look for the quetzals. Unfortunately, the quetzals were in their nest at the time, so most of us didn't get to see any. Although we didn't get a good look at the quetzals, the hike through the cloud forest was beautiful!
